"Sedation Dentistry"
Is there a 'magic pill' that patients in Alexandria, Northern Virginia or the DC metro area can take to become sedated and have no memory of dental treatment?
In short -- No. If there was a 'magic pill', anesthesiologists would disappear and people would take the "magic" and have their hernia repaired or cataracts removed. One simple size does not fit all people and all circumstances.
There are medications available in pill form that will reduce the memory of some people for some procedures. In all cases patients feel some relaxation and experience reduced cognitive skills. In many cases patients can complete dental treatment without any memory, but not in all cases for all people.
The American Dental Association (ADA) has developed guidelines for oral sedation (pills) that specify procedures designed to minimize risk (maximize safety). If you are contemplating sedation for a dental procedure, keep in mind that it may not be satisfactory for your circumstances and be sure that the ADA Guidelines are being followed.
