The appeal of pain-free dentistry seems intuitive; no pain is better than pretty much any pain. But for many people, when it came to dental work, there just didn't seem to be any choice. There was local anesthesia, sometimes sedation but rarely ‘real' anesthesia options provided by an anesthesiologist. Funny what we will accept when we think there is no choice. But dentistry can be pain free!
Physicians have long recognized that pain is not good. When medical procedures are required, an anesthetic choice, up to and including general anesthesia provided by an anesthesiologist, is nearly always available. Surgeons can do more complex procedures and get more consistent results when the patient is totally relaxed (or asleep). They are free to use the most appropriate strategy unconstrained by the time it takes to implement or the need to accommodate an awake patient's comfort level. But it is rare for the full range of of anesthesia options to be offered for dental procedures.
Studies show that patients are happier, heal better and faster and are more satisfied with a pain-free dentistry and peri-operative experience. This means you arrive with reduced anxiety and apprehension, have a painless (or nearly so, an IV can pinch a little sometimes) treatment, procedure or surgery and have little post operative pain. Modern, thoughtful anesthesia can achieve this goal most of the time for most people for ANY procedure - including pain-free dentistry!!

It is entirely possible the awful metaphors about the misery of root canal (or wisdom teeth or any other dental treatment) are based on inadequate pain control and not simply on the nature of the procedures.
