A simple method and "light" level of sedation used commonly by dentists is nitrous oxide gas. Many dentists are trained to use nitrous oxide and have the necessary equipment in the office to administer it.
The real beauty of the gas is that it is the only conscious sedation agent presently known that has been proven to allow safe driving or "executive thinking" (business or life decision making) shortly after administration has stopped. It is odorless and easily administered by mask; the patient takes it in merely by breathing. Breathe it and get the effect – stop breathing it and the effect dissipates in a few minutes. Keep in mind, nitrous oxide has been in continuous use since 1846 for dental treatment - it's not that new. No driver or chaperone is needed, no time off required (except the treatment appointment, of course), the cost is usually reasonable and the effect is nearly immediate. For some people, the sedative effect is NOT pleasant and for others the ‘mask on the nose and dentist in the mouth’ is not tolerable.
