Dental Patients with Special Needs Alexandria

Everyone Should Have Access to Pain-free Dentistry

Our Virginia dentist, Dr. James Snyder and the rest of the team at the Center for Dental Anesthesiology provide outstanding dental care for special needs patients from Alexandria, Washington, D.C., Arlington, and surrounding communities.

We believe that all patients should have dental work completed without pain or anxiety...

Patients come to our office presenting a wide variety of special needs. Some people are generally healthy and are not especially anxious about dental work, but for them local anesthesia alone simply doesn't work. Some people have a very unpleasant or even dangerous reaction to local anesthetics.

For others, the sights sounds, and smells of the dental office trigger deep anxiety or panic, sometimes triggering bad memories of past experiences.

Still other patients present with more complex special needs. Some are unable to sit still in the chair or cooperate with treatment because of young age, a severe gag reflex, or physical or mental disabilities like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's Disease. Some patients have underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart problems, or are in treatment or recovery from cancer. With the administration of sedation/anesthesia, all of these problems can be monitored and controlled and you can be completely pain free and even completely unaware of the dental treatment being done.

How long will the procedure take? That depends on the treatment needed but when you are under anesthesia, time seems to pass in an instant.

In most cases, all needed treatment can be conveniently completed in one visit.

Nearly every day, for many years, we have administered sedation or full general anesthesia to patients with special needs in our office.  We always use the most complete and modern monitoring systems. Dr. Snyder is a dentist-anesthesiologist with comprehensive training and expertise, so a comfortable and safe experience is always our expectation, and should be yours.

Because thorough planning is required, a pre-treatment consultation is always done before treatment is scheduled. This visit gives you a chance to ask questions and fully explore your concerns.  A detailed medical history will be taken and we will gather information to make an accurate diagnosis.   Depending on the type and severity of special needs, a consultation with your physician or specialist may be required.  We will match your special needs and goals with our evaluation and a treatment plan listing all recommended treatments and their costs will be prepared. A consent form must be signed before any treatment will be done. You will be given specific instructions on how to prepare yourself for the sedation/anesthesia appointment.

It is the goal of our practice to deliver the treatment you need and want, putting your comfort first.

There is no reason to be embarrassed about your special needs!!!
